The basic loop
- Put the bowl on your scale. Select the recipe’s weight unit.
- Press tare or zero. Confirm the display reads zero.
- Add the first ingredient to its target. Slow down near the end; use a spoon for the last small additions.
- Zero again, then add the next ingredient.
OXO describes this workflow in its baking guide. Follow the recipe’s mixing order: tare changes the reading, not which ingredients should be combined.
Follow the next number.
Imagine a recipe stage asking for 200 g of flour followed by 50 g of sugar. Here’s what the display means.
The final display is 50 g because that’s what you added after the last reset. The ingredients total 250 g. Write down each target before starting: a zero display does not mean an empty bowl.
Pick your pouring plan.
Straight into the bowl
Useful when the ingredients belong together at this stage.
Tradeoff: an overshoot can be harder to remove cleanly.
Use a prep bowl
Useful when an ingredient must stay separate, or you want to correct its amount first.
Tradeoff: another container to handle.
If a recipe gives only volume, don’t assume a cup of every ingredient has the same weight. Follow its specified method; OXO’s measurement guide explains the distinction.
Zero isn’t extra capacity.
Tare changes the displayed reading. The bowl and everything inside still sit on the platform and count toward its load limit. This follows from how tare works, rather than from a new capacity rating.
Pressing zero doesn’t give you another 11 lb. Plan a smaller batch or use a suitably rated scale when the total load would exceed its limit.
When the bowl hides the screen.
The OXO Good Grips 11 lb Stainless Steel Food Scale with Pull Out Display has a zero function and a display that pulls forward from under a large bowl.
Manufacturer specifications, not NBB measurements. Display steps do not establish an accuracy tolerance. Source: OXO.
Consider it for ordinary recipe weighing when your bowl obscures a fixed display. Skip it for sub-gram dosing. If your existing scale is readable, has tare and accommodates the full load, you may not need to buy anything.
A few useful answers.
Do I tare after adding the bowl?
Yes. That removes the bowl’s contribution from the displayed ingredient weight. Zero again before each new ingredient for this workflow.
What if I forgot whether I pressed tare?
Pause before adding more. Check your recorded weights. Don’t guess that the visible number is the new ingredient’s weight if the reset point is unclear.
Can I mix grams and ounces?
Follow the unit attached to each ingredient and confirm the screen unit before pouring. A consistent weight unit, where the recipe supplies it, reduces opportunities to misread the target.
What about cleaning or automatic shutoff?
Use your exact model’s instructions. This guide does not assume the stainless OXO shares the timers or care directions of its glass counterpart.
Buy for the problem you have.
Match the 11 lb stainless pull-out model, not a 5 lb, 22 lb or glass version. The reason to buy is fixing a visibility or capacity problem, not unlocking a workflow your scale already supports.
