RØDE Wireless Micro: phone kit, Camera Kit or add-on receiver?
Choose around the gear you already own. For simple USB-C phone recording, the original black Wireless Micro kit is the straightforward option. If you are starting with a camera and a phone, compare the complete Camera Kit. If you already own the original Micro, check the standalone Camera Receiver, called CRX, before buying another bundle.
The important catch: RØDE says original Wireless Micro transmitters cannot pair with the receiver inside the Camera Kit. The separately sold CRX is the supported camera upgrade for those transmitters. Similar names hide different hardware. RØDE compatibility guidance
Manufacturer information checked October 9, 2026. The recommendations below are about fit and connections. They do not rank sound quality.
Start with your recording device
Phone only: The original Wireless Micro USB-C kit gives you two clip-on transmitters, a plug-in phone receiver and a charging case. It suits someone who wants a compact phone setup and whose recording app accepts the external audio. Check the connector and case clearance before choosing it. Original kit
Camera and phone, starting fresh: The Camera Kit includes its own pair of transmitters, a camera receiver and a USB-C smartphone receiver. It is worth comparing when you actually need both recording routes. Check the camera's microphone input and your phone app before treating that flexibility as useful. Camera Kit
Already own the original Micro: The standalone CRX adds a camera connection without requiring another pair of original transmitters. That is the upgrade route to investigate first. It does not include microphones, so it is not a complete starter kit. Camera expansion guidance

| Product | Receivers and microphones | Camera connection | The buyer check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Wireless Micro USB-C | Two transmitters and one USB-C phone receiver | No 3.5 mm output on the included phone receiver | Match your phone and recording app |
| Wireless Micro Camera Kit | Two kit transmitters, a camera receiver and a USB-C phone receiver | Included camera receiver connects by 3.5 mm TRS or USB-C to a compatible device | Choose a complete system rather than assuming old transmitters will work |
| Standalone Camera Receiver (CRX) | One receiver; no transmitters | 3.5 mm TRS or USB-C | Add it to compatible original Wireless Micro transmitters |
The Camera Kit includes its case, two magnetic attachments, two furry windshields, an SC2 3.5 mm TRS cable and an SC22 USB-C cable. The standalone CRX package lists the receiver and those two cable types. A product titled “Camera Receiver” can therefore be a very different purchase from “Camera Kit.” Camera Kit datasheet, CRX datasheet
Check the camera manual for a microphone input that accepts the intended connection. A camera's USB-C socket alone does not establish USB microphone support. A headphone socket is also a different job. If the camera has no suitable audio input, pause before ordering this setup.
The pairing mistake to avoid
Supported upgrade path, after the firmware and pairing checks.
Original transmitters cannot pair with this receiver, according to RØDE.
Compatibility statement, not an audio-quality rating. RØDE's exact distinction
Think of the original Micro plus standalone CRX as one upgrade path, and the Camera Kit as a complete bundle with its own transmitters. Buying a spare Camera Kit receiver for your original mics is not the supported shortcut. RØDE's compatibility page explicitly excludes that pairing.
For original transmitters paired to the standalone CRX, RØDE's July 2026 instructions require both devices to be on firmware at least 2.0.3. That is a minimum in the pairing instructions, not a claim that 2.0.3 is today's latest version. Use the current RØDE Central prompts and the instructions for your actual receiver. CRX pairing guide
When buying a replacement or a used component, ask for the full receiver name and a clear view of its controls. A loose unit labelled only “Wireless Micro RX” does not settle compatibility.
The two camera receivers differ
The Camera Kit receiver has a screen; the standalone CRX uses LED indicators. RØDE lists 7 hours for the Camera Kit receiver and 18 hours for the CRX. Those are manufacturer operating-time specifications for the receivers, not measured results or an 18-hour promise for the whole microphone system. Receiver comparison
The Camera Kit receiver's on-device menu lets you change output gain, select split or merged audio, and adjust display brightness. In merged mode the two microphones feed both left and right channels. Split mode places the microphones on separate channels for later adjustment. If you plan to post with little editing, confirm the chosen mode sounds right in playback before the real take. Receiver controls, Audio modes
We would choose between these receivers by the system they support and the controls you need. A longer receiver battery figure alone does not justify buying incompatible hardware.
Direct Connect still depends on your app
Wireless Micro can send audio without the physical receiver through Direct Connect in RØDE Capture on iOS. RØDE's current support guidance does not extend that route to Android or third-party recording apps. For those workflows, plan around a compatible physical receiver and verify the app's external-audio support. Supported apps
Direct Connect also does not provide audio for phone calls or other phone functions. RØDE recommends a receiver for critical recordings or maximum range and notes that Direct Connect can produce lower levels and reduced range. If a recording matters, convenience should not be the only reason to leave the receiver at home. Direct Connect limits, Receiver advice
For a Lightning phone, check the Lightning kit separately. The USB-C kit linked below is a different connector, and the Camera Kit's supplied phone receiver is USB-C. Do not assume a generic adapter preserves every recording route.

Original Micro has no onboard recording
An editorial checklist, not a record of completed testing.
- Name the route. Write down the transmitter, exact receiver, recording device and app. Confirm that combination rather than relying on the family name.
- Check the firmware. Follow the instructions for your kit. For an original Micro update, RØDE says to fully charge the transmitters and remove them from the case so RØDE Central can recognize them. Update instructions
- Record a short sample. Use the intended app, each microphone and your normal speaking position. Play the saved file back. Pairing lights alone do not prove the app recorded the right audio.
- Plan the fallback. RØDE says the original Wireless Micro transmitters have no onboard recording. The connected device must save the audio, so an unsuccessful recording cannot be recovered from a hidden microphone backup. Onboard recording
For care and safety, follow the exact kit's supplied guide. The original Micro quick-start guide says to keep the product away from liquids, leave the housing closed and use RØDE-approved service personnel. Its battery is replaceable only by a skilled person. Safety guide, pages 5–6
Our take
The original black USB-C Micro is a sensible fit for straightforward phone voice recording once the phone and app checks pass. Starting fresh with a camera and phone gives you a reason to compare the complete Camera Kit. Existing original Micro owners should check the standalone CRX upgrade before replacing a working setup.
